Spider Exterminator

Spiders live all over the world, and they can live in almost any habitat. Some of the most common spider species in our region include:

  • House spiders: These spiders live successfully inside structures. If you begin to see large numbers of spider webs in your home, it is likely because house spiders have found a way inside. House spiders are yellowish-brown with an off-white abdomen and angled stripes on their body and legs.
  • Cellar spiders: These spiders have small, oval-shaped bodies that are pale yellowish, light brown, or gray. They have distinct, elongated, thin legs and regularly hang out in damp areas like basements or crawlspaces.
  • Wolf spiders: They are large spiders with eight long legs that allow them to run quickly. Wolf spiders chase after and hunt down their prey- they don't build webs. They have dark brown bodies with cream-colored markings on their hair-covered body and legs.
  • Fishing spiders: Fishing spiders were named because of their ability to run across the water's surface. These spiders are of most concern for people with homes located on lakes, ponds, and near other bodies of water. These spiders look very similar in size and coloring to the wolf spider.

In controlled populations, spiders are helpful, but when they invade our properties in large numbers, they can wreak havoc just like any other pest.

Are Spiders Dangerous?

Spiders are usually not a problem for people. They focus on their insect prey which helps them to fill their bellies. Spiders that can pose a problem for people have venom potent enough to cause us harm. Luckily in the Hampton Roads, VA area, dangerous spiders aren't a significant threat. It is important to note that when spider populations are high, it is generally an indication that you have an overall pest problem on your property. Spiders only hang out where there is plenty of prey for them to feed on.

Spiders are most attracted to and become a problem on properties that provide them with many places to hide like trees, dense vegetation, woodpiles, flower gardens, and lots of yard clutter. Those places not only offer spiders a suitable place to live, but they also provide the spiders they like to feed on a place to live. The more spiders crawling around your property near your home, the more likely they will eventually wind up in your home, usually after following their insect prey indoors.

Where Will I Find Spiders?

When spiders first enter your home, you likely won't notice them. Spiders are naturally reclusive and want to find a dark, quiet place to hang out quickly. Closets, basements, crawlspaces, spaces under furniture, and cabinets under sinks are some of their most popular hideouts. If there are insects in your home for them to feed on, spiders will flourish, and their presence won't so easily go unnoticed. If you see spiders regularly moving around your home, it is time to take action!

  • Keep your home clear of clutter, especially storage areas that provide a quiet respite for spiders.
  • Patch or seal potential entry points in your home's exterior.
  • Maintain a clean kitchen to prevent the insects that spiders like to feed on (flies, cockroaches, ants) from being attracted to your home's interior.
  • Regularly cut your grass and maintain landscaping; spiders love to hide within dense vegetation.
