What Are Fleas?

While it is true that pets are likely the main reason fleas have found their way into your home, they aren't the only reason. Homeowners with or without pets are at risk of these biting pests finding their way into their yards or home. Fleas are tiny but tough. Their oval body is flattened from side to side and covered in a hard shell, making it challenging to squish these insects. While they are wingless, their large, powerful back legs allow them to jump more than 150 times their body length! The sole source of nutrition for these pests is blood from warm-blooded animals. Cats, dogs, rodents, and wild animals are their preferred hosts. They will feed on our blood if we are around, but they don't seek us out.

Are Fleas Dangerous?

Having fleas lurking around your Hampton Roads, VA property is a health risk to you, your kids, and your pets. Through their bites, they are capable of spreading some diseases. Their bites also leave behind red itchy rashes. Scabbing and scarring can occur when people or animals scratch at the bite sites, and open wounds can lead to secondary infections. Fleas also spread parasitic tapeworms to both people and animals.

Why Do I Have A Flea Problem?

Once an adult flea finds and jumps onto an animal host, that is where it will remain throughout its short life. They feed, breed, and the females lay their eggs on their animal hosts. The eggs then roll off the host's body and onto the ground below, where they will develop into new biting fleas. Wherever animals travel or spend time, there are likely fleas around. When wild animals or even neighborhood pets wander into your yard, they could be leaving behind these unwanted tiny terrors. Fleas also regularly get into our homes on the backs of pets, on wild animal intruders like mice, on people's clothing, or in infested pieces of secondhand furniture or rugs.

Where Will I Find Fleas?

Fleas not on an animal host prefer a dark, damp environment. Outside, fleas gather in areas of tall grass and under decks, woodpiles, leaf piles, and other yard debris. In addition to your backyard, some of the most common places to come into contact with fleas are campgrounds, parks, dog parks, wooded areas, grassy areas, and dog boarding facilities. When fleas get into our homes, you may find them in your bedding, dog bedding, upholstered furniture, rugs, and spaces behind baseboards before finding you or your pets to feed on.
